In the early 90s when a baby girl was born to the young immigrant couple, they had no idea to which extent the name Jihane would hold on to their child.
My name is Jihane and welcome to my universe! This feels like my coming-of-age moment. I remember back in high school when my art teacher Ms. Hutman suggested me to purse art at the university. I remember thinking, “how would I ever tell my Haitian parents that I want to purse art in college?”. After graduating high school, I left my senior art portfolio behind; it’s been a decade, yet I still think about those pieces often—I took them for granted. They were a part of me that I could only strive to recreate moving forward.
In 2017, I graduated from Rowan University with my Bachelor of Science in Biological Studies. A few years later, I graduated from the Edward J. Bloustein Master of Health Administration program at Rutgers’s University. I am a scientist by trade but an artist at heart.
I draw my inspiration from conversations or places I have traveled. Most importantly I allow curiosity and creativity to acquire the canvas—whether it be digital or analogous—as I often think to myself “what happens if I do this…”. My mother—who is one of my biggest supporters, categorizes my art as peinture naïve. Renown Naïve artist include Frida Kahlo and Henri Rousseau. My current collection holds pieces from Haiti, Aruba, and Colombia.
Having a passion for art and science has always been my core. Now, I am happy to be able to bring my creativity to life. I hope you will enjoy this website for all that it brings!
